We need your help to make this possible! Below, you will find a list of opportunities to support Camp Erin Orange County and endure we have the funds needed for our “Wish List Fund”.
Camp Erin Orange County provides a safe, caring environment and offers fun recreational activities and supportive projects and discussions to help campers build trust, self-esteem and coping skills.
Created by The Moyer Foundation in 2002, Camp Erin is named in honor of Erin Metcalf, a 17- year-old hospice patient and close friend of Karen and Jamie Moyer, founders of The Moyer Foundation. In partnership with child bereavement experts, The Moyer Foundation established the camp in Erin’s name following her death. Today, Camp Erin is the largest network of bereavement camps in the country.
At Camp Erin, age appropriate groups provide an opportunity for campers to interact with peers also dealing with loss. Planned activities, discussions and remembrance ceremonies create a safe environment for sharing, having fun and making friends. Bereavement specialists and trained volunteers lead art therapy, story telling, recreational activities, swimming, music, hiking and grief activities.
Often times, children do not have an avenue to express their grief or to honor and remember the person that died. Being a grieving child can be a lonely experience. Many times, he or she is the only one in class or ‘on the team’ who has lost a family member or friend. At a time in a child’s life when it is very important to fit in, grief can be an isolating experience.
Camp Erin allows grieving children to be together, build community and share their feelings with one another. At camp, they learn that grief, though painful, is a normal and healthy emotion to experience. Professional bereavement counselors lead, train and work alongside community volunteers at Camp Erin. All of the staff has one thing in common: understanding and compassion toward grieving children. To become a Camp Erin volunteer, applicants must undergo a personal interview and all appropriate background checks. All staff and volunteers receive mandatory training on how to help a grieving child.
